Old radio

20110925-214229.jpg

Warm up the valves for the velvet tones of the medium wave. Bit of ground hum sometimes. Must get blogging again. Winter is the radio season. Long dark nights and all that.

BBC WS still alive just

BBC World Service may no longer be broadcasting to Europe on shortwave and medium wave but with luck, a clear night and not being surrounded by noise you might just hear their transmitter in Cyprus. In Italy at present. Out in the valleys of Umbria. Okeh you are suppose to have access to the internet or the Hotbird satellite to listen to your favourite public broadcaster. I pay a licence fee for this and would gladly pay a bit extra. Anyway these frequencies are beamed to big Africa but once those electro-magnetic bits energy get into what they use to call the ether have now strayed west and north to my wee 10 band all of 10 GBP radio. Marvellous….

All in KHz at various times of the day and with varying signal strength.

On holiday near Perugia. Over and out.

Tribute FM & Online

The first English-language radio station based in Libya is now broadcasting via website out of the eastern rebel stronghold in Benghazi,  according to the opposition National Transitional Council.

“Tribute FM is the brainchild of a number of British Libyans who understand the importance of reaching out to the Libyan diaspora around the world as well as Libyans at home,” said a statement by the NTC.

You can listen to Tribute FM here. The station begins broadcasting at 1800h UT / 2000h Libya Time and lasts until the early morning. Music is played as well

MW / AM Any future

the big question is what Ofcom will do with the mediumwave frequencies. Recent research by the media regulator found that there would be a virtually zero chance that new players want to broadcast on mediumwave. Yet British radio is suffering from falling advertising revenues, and the migration from analogue to digital radio does not make things easy for any newcomers.”

via Media Network — Latest media news and musings from Radio Netherlands Worldwide.

Medium Wave is still available, those frequencies can still be used for ever but has it got a future? Probably yes but not with the stations we have now.

If you have a choice you go for the highest fidelity – digital or online. But there are lots of the landmass of the UK where reception of DAB, 3G or Wi-Fi is a deep blackspot. Medium Wave gets everywhere….

French Radio London

A little discovery this week a new online & DAB station. Well not on DAB outside the capital so it’s another one for the iPhone. Came up on a search on the Wunderadio App – they must update their database on a regular basis ‘cos it’s only been broadcasting for a week.

“An easy-to-listen-to, diverse selection of French music will comprise 80% of FRL’s output. The remainder will be made up of news, sport, culture, politics, chat and high profile interviews – a mélange of music and information the 400,000 London-based Francophones, and the many Francophiles, are yearning to hear.”

Radio parts shop in Trieste

It's a shop not a station

It’s summer and as this phot shows there has been a visit to Trieste. It is a shop that sells electrical stuff for the technically competant. But summer is a great time for thinking during the chilling out season. Back in September with some short radio films. Alive, well and listening.

K6 phone box

Conversations We Wish Wed Had, a new sound commission by Ailís Ní Ríain at MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry) Part of Future Everything Showcase May 12 23, 2010.

You can read about the commission at the Manchester Modernist website, a treasure trove for discovering 20th architecture in the city…whilst it is still there. Manchester does have a 300 year habit of pulling buildings down and putting up new ones. That anything old has survived is usually luck and not thru preservation.

There is a wee error in the movie. The phone box pointed to with a finger on the map isn’t the one with the sound installation. Oh well nobody’s perfect.

Radio has a new lease of life when it embraced the internet. This is a weblog about wireless with pictures, that's the vague theme.
